This page covers bacterial disease in fishes – and lists Romet Fish Food Suppliers.
Bacteria are an essential element in nature. It is continually present in water, soil and air. Whereas good bacteria can assist fishkeepers by breaking down ammonia and nitrite, bad bacteria attacks fish in ways such as festering open sores, ulcers, Lolumnari and fin rot.
Now matter how good a fishkeeper you are, occasionally your fish will get sick. Harmful pathogens are a big risk to the good health, and continued life of your fish. Fish are more susceptible to bacterial disease when their immune systems are low. This is usually caused by stressing factors such as overcrowding, poor diet, poor water quality, or fish that are not comfortable in their surrounds (bullying). When treatment is given, any stressing factors must also be dealt with or the infection will likely return after the treatment period ends. Prevention is better than cure.
The best way to help your fish recover from bacterial infection is to provide them with medicated food – which contains an antibiotic. (Antibiotics do not affect parasites, fungus or viruses, so an accurate diagnosis is essential.)

Romet Fish Food
The antibiotics in Romet fish food are a commercially prepared drug that needs to be administered internally. It helps control both internal and external bacterial infections.
Romet Fish Food TC (Top Coat) by Microbe-lift, is an amazing product, as your regular pond food can be rolled in the Romet formula to give it an anti-bacterial coating. This is just as effective as having a specialized medicated food. Romet turns any food into a medicated fish food.
It has the active ingredients sulfadinmethoxine and ormetoprin which work better when administered together than if used alone. Both fight bacterial infections and give your fish a better chance of a fast recovery.
It is common for a sick fish to lose its appetite, so early detection of bacterial disease is important. With sinking pond food, it can be more difficult to tell what dose your fish are getting, so using floating fish food pellets better allows observation, and a more accurate assessment.
If you just have one sick fish, and they can be easily singled out. One trick is to feed the healthy fish in their normal area, and target feed your sick fish off to one side while the others are distracted. It does no harm for all of your fish to eat medicated food – but it can be very expensive.
Medicated feeds deteriorate, but keeping them in a cool dry place helps their effective longevity. A sealed bag in a freezer is ideal.
It is vital to carefully measure the dosage of Romet fish food for it to have best effect. Always read the instructions and label carefully.
It is also important to consider the economics of using medicated feeds. Unless they are a favorite pet, the cost of medication should not exceed the value of the fish!
Medicating you fish via Romet antibiotic fish food is frequently recommended as the most effective way to control bacterial disease outbreaks. This form of treatment is effective for all pond fish, such as koi, catfish, salmon and trout.

Interesting article, I have two questions regarding it. Would you use this alongside regular fish food or in place of it? How often would you use the anti-bacterial food?
